The Journey Cover and Spread

The Journey

A comprehensive resource for discipleship leaders

Project Details:
As a collection of 54 modules written by over 20 authors, The Journey lived up to its name as a challenging design project. With the stakeholder’s value of bold and fun design elements but source text copy that was often dense and expansive, it required a larger final page size and a flexible design to accommodate modules of varying length.

The effective implementation of InDesign's typography tools like paragraph styles (and some common GREP tricks) made making changes and refinements much less of a headache as the project experienced delays and restarts.

  • Stakeholder/Client: Jason Weimer Director of Publishing for Cru Press

“I was so glad to see you recognized today by your colleagues…what a blessing you have been to me, James and our team, especially where it came to the Expansion Plan and all your expertise to make that a great publication. Your honor and recognition is well deserved!”

Chief Development Officer - Cru

Expansion Plan

Publication distributed annually to donors as a supplement and a summary of Cru’s annual report.

Distinctives of the Project:

As external organizational communication, the piece falls within the boundaries of Cru’s visual branding guidelines and all written content adheres to Cru’s written style guide (AP style customized with guidance on Cru-specific names, acronyms, etc.)

Because of a short turnaround window, much of the copy was generated concurrently with the assembly of the layout/design and, working alongside the team of stakeholders/clients, I was able to make suggestions and refinements to the stories and written communication.

Golf Scramble

Fundraiser for the local Cru movement at Clemson University

Ambitiously labeled “first annual” in 2017, the grass-green golf aesthetic was refined in further iterations of the design package to provide a dark background to showcase business logos and other sponsors of the event. The visual identity of the event is fairly generic as it makes way for more primary visual communication but it marks a wide range of on-site materials, signs and promotional products.
